In a changing work environment, employers need to listen more

The work landscape has been constantly changing over the past few years. In light of this, Dexian conducted research to understand what employees are looking for, what employers are offering, and the key work trends for this year.

The work environment has changed rapidly over the past few years, especially due to technological advancements and innovations. In this climate, what are employees looking for and what are employers offering? Dexian recently surveyed 2,000 employees and 1,325 HR decision makers to explore some of the work trends for this year. The survey revealed a significant disconnect between what employees need and what companies are offering across a range of workplace transformational factors, from recruiting to working patterns. Below are some of the key insights gleaned from the survey:

AI disrupts the “personal” recruiting process

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is likely to be the biggest disruptive change of our time as it evolves at a speed that most businesses around the world are struggling to keep up with. When it comes to recruiting, many leaders (60%) struggle to understand when, where and how to implement AI throughout the recruiting process. Job search and hiring is a highly personal process that marks the beginning of the employer-employee relationship.

The surveyOpens a new window found that 72% of employees believe companies are relying too much on technology and AI for recruiting, and that it's a problem. As AI grows in importance, companies must balance its benefits with the potential impact on candidate experience, engagement, and their ability to attract top talent.

Here are some more important statistics:

Only 48% of employees agree that using technology to search for jobs would help them find the right job faster. Only 24% of employees think AI should be used to review applications and resumes. Cultural fit is not a top priority for employers.

Company values and individual cultural fit are key factors in company and employee success. Yet, the survey found that employers don't consider it a top priority when hiring employees. In fact, while over 62% of employees took a skills assessment, only 43% took a culture or values assessment. Additionally, only 47% of employees said their employer measures employees' feelings about their success/failure in embodying the organization's culture and values.

The study also found that only 50% of companies use employee surveys and data to determine what's important to them and build a values-based culture.

Given the importance of company culture and how most employers handle it, teams and leaders must take responsibility for creating and living the organization’s culture and values.

Work preferences are changing, but companies aren't keeping up

Over the past four years, employee work preferences have shifted. Yet, a recent WorkHuman survey found that only 66% of employees believe their work arrangement is their preference. Additionally, a Dexian study found that only 48% of organizations survey employees about their work arrangement preferences. And this is creating a huge burden for businesses. Nearly 20% of employees who said their work arrangement is not their preference scored lower across all positive workplace outcomes, including productivity, connection, and career growth expectations.

The survey also found that about 32% of employees would consider changing jobs if their employer mandated a return to the office.

Companies need to upskill and reskill their employees to meet the changing work scenario

Rapid technological innovation is reshaping industries and redefining the way people work. Digitalization, AI, and automation are transforming job roles, creating both opportunities and challenges for companies and employees. Nearly 75% of employees agree that the pace of their profession is changing so quickly that they need to continually reinvent themselves. Nearly 49% find it difficult to advance in their careers due to rapid changes in the workplace. Additionally, 59% say that constantly changing technology makes it difficult to plan their future careers.

Another WalkMe surveyOpens a new window found that 41% of respondents use AI tools on a daily basis, and 84% believe the technology is becoming increasingly important to career advancement. However, only 15% consider themselves AI experts, and only 7% have received extensive training in AI. Importantly, 86% said they would be more likely to use AI if the tool actively guided them through their workflow.

Similarly, a Celigo surveyOpens a new window found that while nearly all respondents have implemented AI and seen early success, some are seeing barriers to widespread adoption across their enterprise. According to 47% of respondents, the main reason is not understanding what AI can bring to their organization. With most overburdened and understaffed IT teams lacking the resources or time to oversee AI implementations across the organization, many teams are looking for ways to empower non-technical business users to create and manage their own AI solutions while maintaining proper governance.

All this means that organisations can reskill and upskill their workforce to ensure they have the knowledge and skills they need to take advantage of emerging technologies to stay competitive in a rapidly changing environment.

Companies that develop an employer value proposition that focuses on helping employees adapt to technological change and upskilling them where necessary can claim a competitive advantage in attracting and retaining top talent.

Key Takeaways

Survey findings reveal that in most cases, companies are not demanding from their employees or are not listening to their needs and wants. Employees demand a lot from their employers, but employers are not responding to their demands to better understand the ongoing changes in employee experience in today's environment, which may have a detrimental effect on the success of organizations. Hence, the time is now for organizations to respond to the demands of their employees to ensure competitiveness and improved employee experience.
