The journey of AI Essentials from concept to reality was a cross-functional effort, with experts from multiple organizations across Google, including Google DeepMind, Education for Social Impact, Technology & Society, and Google Research, contributing to the creation and design of the course materials.

When it came time for beta testing, testers tried out all five modules and provided feedback, including identifying sections they felt were too theoretical.

In response to that feedback, the team decided to add more practical elements to the course, says Yasmin Sanders Fathi, a Grow with Google program manager who led the development of AI Essentials. They created, for example, a five-point checklist for responsible AI use, which includes action items such as evaluating content before sharing it. We thought this was a useful, hands-on approach to teaching a fairly theoretical concept, Yasmin says.

Partners in the nonprofit, education, commercial, and government sectors also tested the course. During the development phase, they assembled a content advisory group of top partners and had calls with them, asking them questions about the challenges they face and how they want to incorporate AI in the workplace, Yasmin says. Then, once the syllabus was ready, they reviewed it and invited their employees and faculty to beta test it.
