Google and CSIRO team up to solve the solar duck dilemma with tougher, smarter inverters

Australian scientists are working with Google's secretive research and development division to find ways to integrate more renewable energy into the traditional electricity grid.

X, the company's so-called “moonshot factory,” said Tuesday it has partnered with CSIRO to develop smart inverters that could accelerate the transition to renewable energy.

Scientists from both companies say the inverter prototype, partly tested in Newcastle, has the potential to stabilise the power grid and integrate more solar, wind and hydroelectric power onto it.

The announcement comes amid a fierce debate over Australia's energy future, with the Labor government pushing for 82 percent renewable energy by 2030, while the Coalition government has argued that seven nuclear power plants should be built by 2050 instead.

The smart inverter is being developed as part of X's renewable energy project “Tapestry.”

The company's prototype inverter is based on electric vehicle technology and features more sensors than traditional inverters, software that allows it to communicate with solar panels and batteries, and a tougher material called silicon carbide.

Tapestry's chief scientist Leo Casey told AAP the smart inverters were designed to manage the flow of renewable energy into the traditional power grid, avoiding oversupply, meeting demand and eliminating blackouts.

“Around the world, we are facing challenges as we try to integrate more and more renewable energy onto the grid, and the challenge lies in the interaction of old grids with new equipment,” Dr Casey said.

“The fundamental objective is to bring more renewable energy onto the grid in a stable way, and we hope that this design will have a lot of cool features that others can take advantage of.”

CSIRO principal research scientist Julio Braslavski said the agency had tested a lower-power version of the smart inverter and ordered higher-power trials of the device in August.

Dr Braslavski said that if proven, the technology could make more of the renewable energy available from Australia's rooftop solar installations possible, and move the energy within the network to where it is needed.

“One of the goals is to have these inverters balance the grid in real time,” he said.

“If we can distribute this power more efficiently, it will ease congestion and allow power to be used where it's needed without having to buy new or additional generators.”

Dr Casey said the team will present some of their findings at an energy conference in July to generate interest in testing the device on existing power grids.

Tapestry general manager Paige Crahan said the ultimate goal of the project is to create a greener, more reliable power grid and change the way the country thinks about renewable energy.

“The reason we get up in the morning is to show the rest of the world that we can run an energy system that is much more renewable than we are today,” she said.
