Google Pixel smartphones need urgent update, US government warns

The US government has ordered employees to immediately update their Google Pixel smartphones due to a mysterious security vulnerability.

Google has already released a fix for the critical flaw, which is reportedly caused by a bug within the Android operating system, but has not provided details on how it could be exploited.

According to the government warning, Android Pixel firmware contains an unspecified vulnerability that could allow privilege escalation. Please apply mitigations as instructed by your vendor or discontinue use of the product if mitigations are not available.

The security issue is a zero-day vulnerability, meaning that it could be used by hackers to carry out cyber attacks before it was discovered and mitigations were put in place.

The vulnerability, called CVE-2024-32896, means Pixel owners need to update their phones to the latest version or risk having their phones taken over.

GrapheneOS, an Android-based operating system, warned that the security vulnerabilities are not unique to Pixel phones, but Pixel phones will be the first to receive the update, while other Android users will receive the update in August.

Google said the vulnerability has already been used in targeted attacks, but did not provide details about who was targeted or how.

The firmware security patches also include fixes for 49 more vulnerabilities related to both hardware and software components.

Google Pixel phones can be updated within the device's Settings app. Software updates typically take anywhere from a few minutes to around 30 minutes, depending on how new your phone is.

In its June 2024 Pixel update bulletin, Google said it “recommends all customers accepting these updates to their devices.”

The National Institute of Standards and Technology has announced that government employees have until July 4 to update their Google Pixel devices or stop using the smartphones.
