What's the fun in posting on LinkedIn?

Emma Jacobs’ Business Life column ( LinkedIn revamp is missing one element of humour , June 24th) ends with a powerful message: “In the war against the machines, #humour may be our best defence.”

This is very true and addresses a real issue in a world where genuine humor is a scarce resource. It's certainly a measurable observation, as only a small percentage of the many posts on LinkedIn elicit funny responses or comments that are likely to elicit a smile.

Humor has a natural, almost always spontaneous nature, and that's what makes it so different from LinkedIn.

I don't know why this happens, but LinkedIn users are generally so prepared and over-prepared that they leave little to no room for spontaneity, which kills the humor.

Humor is the greatest gift God has given to mankind and to some extent what distinguishes humans from machines and even animals. This is why we are moved by remembering moments of humor when the human with whom we shared them is gone or no longer around. Machines do not yet have this potential and may not even come close to it even at the highest level of advancement.

Just as an architect can design a house with the help of a computer but it is a human who actually builds it, Google Maps can advise the best route but not the best path, and Amazon's Alexa can advise hit songs but not the most loved ones, artificial intelligence can be the reason we find something funny but not humorous.

There is and always will be a difference between the two: AI can't bridge the gap from funny to humorous.
