Google wants its Find My Device network to be ubiquitous

Android's Find My Device network was highly anticipated, but so far it has been a huge disappointment. Google says improvements are planned, but encourages Android users to make sure the Find My Device network actually works everywhere. Here's how to do it.

Google began rolling out its Find My Device network in April and began shipping trackers like AirTags in May. In our experience, the trackers work relatively well, especially Pebblebee's trackers, but the network itself is a stumbling block. There are a few factors at play, but one of the biggest issues we noticed is that Google defaulted the Find My Device network to only work in high traffic areas, rather than having it work all the time.

The company is now urging users to change that setting.

In a statement to 9to5Google this week, Google confirmed that improvements to the Find My Device network are on the way, but also directly urged Android users to change the settings on their devices to ensure the Find My Device network works in all areas.

Google says:

Bluetooth tag owners are encouraged to change their “Find Devices” network setting to “Use Network in All Areas” to improve the network's ability to locate lost items in low traffic areas.

Doing this is pretty easy: open the Find My Device app and tap on Find My Device from your profile picture to access your network settings. From there, tap on Find Offline Device and switch the setting to Use Network in All Areas, as shown below.

The entire process takes just a moment and your Android device will be able to discover devices on the network no matter where you are.

But the impact of this change will only really be felt by everyone, or at least a large number of people, if they make the change. For now, Google has it set to block the network for all users only in high-traffic areas, presumably for privacy reasons.
