NSIA Announces Second Phase of $220,000 Startup Innovation Awards

The Nigerian Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA) has announced the startups that will participate in the second phase of the Accelerator Stage (physical bootcamp) of the NSIA Innovation Prize (NPI 2.0).

The week-long physical bootcamp will culminate in a mini Demo Day, where startups will pitch their solutions in front of a panel of judges drawn from the technology and business ecosystem, and progress to Demo Day, where they will receive five weeks of all-expenses-paid training at Draper University in Silicon Valley, US, and compete for a total prize pool of $220,000.

Managing Director/CEO of NSIA, Aminu Umar Sadiku, said the authority remains committed to leveraging the award to drive socio-economic development, particularly through promoting the technology ecosystem, encouraging youth entrepreneurship, driving innovative solutions to everyday challenges and establishing the global relevance of Nigeria’s tech talent.

For the two-part accelerator phase, 100 startups were selected after conducting rigorous evaluation and due diligence of over 7,000 early-stage companies that initially registered for the competition.

From these, after further screening, the following startups across multiple sectors were shortlisted to proceed to the physical bootcamp:

Umar Sadiq further explained that the NPI is a multi-year initiative by the authority to identify and nurture early-stage companies with the potential to bring about transformational change in the country.

Now in its second edition, the NPI has attracted significant attention, with high-quality applications from interested companies increasing from 2,000 in the first edition to more than 7,000 in 2024.

This initiative is in line with the Authority’s ongoing efforts to foster the tech ecosystem by identifying and rewarding Nigerian innovators, providing them with the right tools to scale product-market fit, connecting start-ups with potential investors, and providing a robust community of tech innovators and entrepreneurs.

It is a tiered competition, divided into a pre-selection phase where innovators apply through an application portal, and an accelerator phase where top finalists will participate in a virtual and in-person training bootcamp and demo day, where the top 10 finalists will pitch their solutions to a panel of technology and business leaders.

After the Demo Day stage, the top 10 finalists will participate in an all-expenses-paid training program at Draper University in Silicon Valley, USA.

Some of the startups selected for the bootcamp include Magic Carpet, Materials Pro, Jump n Pass, Awacash, VPay, Betalife, Centio Healthcare, Yalo, Pocket Lawyers, Doktorconnect and Trashcoin.

Others include One Health, Redease, VPD, Kunda Kids, Agroxchange Technology, Sycamore, Passcoder, Earlybean, Powerfull, Adashe, Cash Africa, TownHall, Sakula, Pave and Tribapay.
