AT&T's Next Up Anytime Add-On lets you upgrade your phone multiple times a year

As you keep your phone for a long time, you might want to upgrade more frequently, and AT&T has launched a new add-on called “Next Up Anytime” aimed at people who like to try out new devices one after the other, CNET has learned.

Priced as a $10-per-month add-on, the new service allows you to upgrade up to three times every 12 months, as long as you've paid for at least one month of the installment plan you get from AT&T and made at least one Next Up Anytime payment.

Any remaining payments on the device you trade in (which must be in “good working condition”) will be waived and replaced with a new installment period starting on the new device you're upgrading from.

You can upgrade after paying one month's installment, but anyone wanting to take advantage of the carrier's latest upgrade offer must have paid 33% of the outstanding balance. AT&T is offering a 36-month installment plan for the device, so for most people, you'll either have to keep the phone for a year or pay the amount until you reach the 33% threshold to be eligible for the carrier's latest offer.

This means that while you can still take advantage of Next Up Anytime to trade in your device early, you won't get the benefit of the upgrade offer if you don't meet that threshold. You'll end up paying the full amount in installments, and you'll be waived for the payment on your old device, but once you've paid 33% off your new phone, you'll be able to take advantage of your carrier's upgrade promotions again.

AT&T says it will start rolling out the new program to all users starting July 16th.

Users who want to add Next Up Anytime must do so within 14 days of purchasing a new phone on an AT&T installment plan. The add-on can be removed at any time, but must remain enabled if you want to upgrade again before the device is paid for in full.

AT&T has offered an early trade-in option for an additional fee for some time now, and the current option is called Next Up, which is likewise an add-on to your regular wireless plan that, for $6 per month, lets you pay 50% of your device's installment plan payment and upgrade when you trade in your device.

Next Up will continue, and users who upgraded through the program will be able to switch to Next Up Anytime when they move to a new device.
