If you're a Google Sheets user, you might notice a significant speed increase the next time you launch Sheets.

Google has announced several improvements to its browser-based spreadsheet editor, including doubling the calculation speed. Google says you'll notice the improvements no matter how big your files are or what you're doing. Of course, the change might not be as noticeable for formulas that appear to be processed instantly, but it should be more noticeable for larger, more complex formulas.

In a case study on the improvements, Google explained that the speed increase was the result of moving code processing from JavaScript to WebAssembly.

These upgrades follow the addition last spring of smooth scrolling and expanded cell limits for desktop, and last fall's addition of Gemini, which can summarize open spreadsheets or provide pre-built spreadsheets. Google says the changes will be apparent whether you're running formulas, creating pivot tables, or using conditional formatting, but they won't affect everyone — only Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge users will see the calculation speed improvements.

It's a small caveat, considering Chrome alone accounts for more than 60% of browser usage worldwide. Google added that these improvements will also be rolled out to Safari and Firefox in the future.

Google isn't done improving Sheets just yet, either: The company is currently working on ways to improve the web app's initial load time and improve copy/paste and filter performance.
