Google Translate nearly doubles the number of languages it supports

Google today announced that it has added support for 110 new languages to Google Translate, nearly doubling the number of languages it can translate.
The company used the PaLM 2 large-scale language model to facilitate these additions.
Isaac Caswell, a senior software engineer at Google, claimed in a blog post that the newly added languages are spoken by more than 614 million people, or about 8% of the world's population.
He noted that about a quarter of the languages are of African origin, “representing the largest expansion of African languages to date.”
The blog post also briefly explains Google's philosophy on choosing languages and deciding which dialects to support.
Languages have a huge amount of variation, including regional variants, dialects, and different spelling standards. In fact, many languages have no standard form, making it impossible to choose the correct variant. Our approach is to prioritize the most commonly used variant of each language. For example, Romani is a language with many dialects across Europe. Our model produces text that is closest to South Vlax Romani, the variant often used online. However, it also contains elements of other variants such as North Vlax Romani and Balkan Romani.
This update brings the total number of languages supported by Google Translate to 243. This is just the beginning of the company's publicized efforts to eventually support 1,000 languages through the use of AI. A full list of added languages can be found on a help page published by Google.
In contrast, Apple Translate supports 21 languages, but that number includes both US and UK English as separate options. Apple recently announced plans to add Hindi to its Translate app. Of course, Apple and Google have taken very different approaches to these tools and have different levels of investment.
