Apple's Vision Pro now shipping in China at a higher price than in the US

Hangzhou, China Apple's mixed reality headsets began shipping in China on Friday, but retail prices are about 18% higher than in the United States.

The device will retail for a starting price of 29,999 yuan ($4,128) in China and $3,500 in the US.

In response to questions from CNBC, a Beijing-based customer surnamed Chen said he had offered Apple CEO Tim Cook a Vision Pro for about 10,000 yuan ($1,376) less. The customer, who asked not to be named out of concern for speaking to foreign media, said many people in China might prefer to buy a second-hand Vision Pro because they usually get a discount when buying from sellers unrelated to Apple.

Many of the most popular posts about the device on Chinese social media platform Weibo on Friday centered around the hashtag “Is it worth paying for the Chinese version of the Vision Pro?”, according to a translation by CNBC.

CNBC has reached out to Apple for comment.

Greater China accounted for about 18% of Apple's revenue in the three months ended March 30, according to Apple filings.

Over the past year, Apple has faced growing competition from Huawei devices and other domestic brands amid a heightened focus on national security.

Chen pre-ordered the Vision Pro, picked it up at a major store in Beijing and received training on how to use it.

A store salesperson told CNBC that a 30-minute training session for Vision Pro pre-orders on Friday at an Apple store in Beijing from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. was fully booked.

Chinese companies including Tencent, Alibaba and JD.com have released Vision Pro versions of their apps for shopping, gaming and video watching.
