How to use AI to summarize Google Docs

I believe there are two things every digital nomad needs: a good hotspot and streamlined productivity, so I wanted to bring another artificial intelligence tool to my writing-focused work, specifically one named after my personal favorite self-study tool.

On December 6, 2023, just under eight months after the release of OpenAI’s GPT-4, Google Workspace welcomed its new AI-powered assistant, Gemini, into the digital world.

Though the name doesn't correspond to its launch date (in fact, the tool was originally called something else, Bard), Gemini is named after the dual nature of this astrological symbol – its ability to see things from multiple perspectives while adapting quickly and connecting with a wide range of people.

Gemini's new name came about because “we wanted to bring the teams working on language modeling closer together,” said Gemini co-technical lead Jeff Dean.

Because I own a business domain through Google Workspace, I got 14 days of Gemini for free. During those two short weeks, I had the opportunity to interact with the “Help me write” prompt and get text suggestions based on what I typed into the text screen, including drafting a blog post, helping me write song lyrics, and rewriting my original text to adjust the tone or make it more concise.

You can also use Gemini with Google Docs to summarize and create images for files in Google Drive and emails in Gmail.

How to use AI to summarize Google Docs

Step 1: Open your document in Google Docs and highlight and select the text you want to summarize in Gemini.

Gemini calls its AI writing tool a “useful and fascinating resource” for people who enjoy finding patterns and connections.

I agree – I decided to adopt Google Workspace Gemini because I wanted to speed up and streamline my writing process, and because it seamlessly integrated with all the other Google products I use on a regular basis, I decided to purchase a monthly Gemini membership.
