Google Translate adds 110 languages in biggest expansion ever: Awadhi, Marwadi and more

American tech giant Google has significantly expanded its Google Translate service, adding support for 110 new languages. The major upgrade, announced on Thursday, marks the biggest expansion in the history of the translation tool, which now supports a total of 243 languages.

The latest additions are made possible through the use of Google's in-house PaLM 2 large language model (LLM), which uses artificial intelligence (AI) to learn new languages, particularly related languages and regional dialects.

Among the newly supported languages are Awadhi and Marwadi, regional dialects of India. This expansion is part of Google's ambitious 1,000 Languages initiative, announced in November 2022, which aims to create AI models that can support 1,000 of the world's most spoken languages. The inclusion of these 110 new languages marks a significant milestone in this ongoing project.

Google prioritized including the most commonly used dialects of each language. For example, when considering Romani, which has many dialects across Europe, the AI model selected the Southern Vraki Romani dialect, which is widely used online. The availability of text data for training the AI model also influenced the selection of new languages.

Notable additions include Cantonese, one of the most requested languages for Google Translate, and Afar, a tonal language spoken in Djibouti, Eritrea and Ethiopia. The majority of the new languages, about a quarter, are African, reflecting Google's commitment to linguistic diversity and inclusion.

In a blog post, Google highlighted the role of volunteer community contributions in identifying and adding new languages, especially in areas with limited digital resources. This expansion underscores Google's ongoing efforts to overcome language barriers and make information accessible to a wider audience.
