Khasi is among 110 new languages added to Google Translate

SHILLONG, June 28: Google has announced that it will use artificial intelligence (AI) to add 110 new languages to Google Translate, including Cantonese, several African languages and Khasi from Meghalaya.

A Google representative said that these new languages are spoken by more than 614 million people, opening up translation opportunities to about 8% of the world's population.

Some of the world's major languages have more than 100 million speakers, while others are spoken by small indigenous communities and some have few native speakers but are undergoing active revitalization efforts, the company said in a statement.

The addition of Khasi to Google Translate will be a huge boon to domestic and international tourists visiting Meghalaya and will help bridge the language barrier between locals and tourists. While most of the state's residents speak English, even if not fluently, the use of Google Translate will undoubtedly help boost the tourism economy.

According to Britannica, the longest running English language encyclopedia, there are approximately 900,000 speakers of Khasi, most of whom speak Cushitic languages. Other languages in this group include Amwi (Wo), Sinten (Punaru), and Lingam.

Google Translate's latest update is its biggest expansion to date. New languages include widely spoken and under-spoken, indigenous and revitalized languages. The expansion follows Google's launch of its 1,000 languages initiative, adding 24 languages using zero-shot machine translation in 2022.
