Severe geomagnetic storms affecting Earth today

According to the Space Weather Prediction Center, a coronal mass ejection (CME) from the Sun reached Earth on June 25, causing a G4 (severe) geomagnetic storm.

SWPC reports that geomagnetic storms occur when the Sun ejects some of its plasma and magnetic field into space (CME). When this ejection is directed towards Earth, it interacts with the Earth's magnetic field and creates the Aurora Borealis. Geomagnetic storms can also affect technological systems such as satellites and GPS. These are very difficult to predict and do not usually affect daily life.

Several auroras were reported in the United States on Thursday night as a result of the CME's geomagnetic storm. As of Friday morning, the conditions have reached a G4 (severe) level. If these conditions persist into the evening, the auroras may become visible again, depending on a few other factors.
