A team from ESA's Spaceship EAC initiative has revived LEGO building skills, 3D printing the famous bricks from lunar rego and meteorite dust, offering a glimpse into what future lunar construction might look like.

While 3D printing something the size and shape of LEGO bricks is no easy feat, it demonstrates the precision and fine-tuning of the process — a common test for these types of projects — and the print demonstrates the ability to create interlocking blocks that would be essential for building surface infrastructure such as lunar habitable walls.

But the blocks made by the team on Earth contain another space-related surprise: In addition to lunar regolith, they're made from special dust taken from a 4.5-billion-year-old meteorite that was 3D printed on Earth.

The Spaceship EAC team is focusing on In-Situ Resource Utilization (ISRU) for sustainable living and work on the Moon. These methods involve using materials already available on the Moon's surface, such as lunar dust and regolith, for construction and to extract oxygen and metals from them, eliminating the need to transport these materials from Earth, significantly reducing the time and cost of transportation.

Spaceship EAC has collaborated with LEGO to produce special bricks to introduce the technology to a wider audience and spark curiosity and interest among younger generations. These bricks will be on display in various LEGO stores around the world this summer.

SpaceshipEAC is based at the European Astronaut Centre (EAC) in Cologne, Germany. The team is primarily made up of early stage researchers working to develop new technologies for living and working on the Moon, with a focus on areas relevant to human spaceflight and future lunar exploration.
