Gett Geppert helps with West Jordan neighborhood Google Maps mapping issue

People who live in the West Jordan neighborhood around 7200 South and 2300 West are missing package and food deliveries, spending time with friends — basically, they're missing anything that involves someone using Google Maps directions to come to their house.

“You can't have friends over for a party or anything,” said Dustin Marks, a nearby resident.

He showed us how you can enter his address into Google Maps and the navigation app will direct you to a different location. Currently, Marks has to warn visitors not to use Google Maps if they want to find his house. Sure, it's easy with friends, but not so easy when talking to a delivery driver.

“It seems like it's just a Google Maps issue,” Marks said. “Apple Maps seems to be better, but not everyone has an Apple device.”

Marks said the neighbors had tried to contact Google to get the map issue fixed, but were unsuccessful. Fed up with their failed negotiations with the tech giant, Marks and the neighbors decided to contact KSL Investigators.

“It's just annoying,” he said. “We live in a modern society, and nobody does paperwork anymore.”

The app showed me that entering an address in the 7200 block of Mark's neighborhood actually returned results for the 8200 block in Salt Lake County, 10 blocks off and just over a mile and 25 miles away.

I took a screenshot of my observation and sent it to Google's communications team. All I got was an automated response: “Thank you for contacting us. If you're a member of the press or a Google employee, we'll get back to you as soon as possible.”

No other word came from Google, but someone seemed to read the message, and the mapping problem for Marks and his neighbors was quickly resolved.

He believes it shouldn't have been that difficult.

“If we fix the algorithm, we can move forward,” he said. “We need a very simple and clear way to correct these kinds of address mistakes.”

Mapping satellites are regulated by the U.S. Space Command, which argues it has no authority to force private companies to fix errors in their mapping programs. Its only recourse is to file complaints and get the companies to fix them.

Google Maps has a help page that explains how to fix addresses and other map content. Apple has a similar help page. You can report map errors with Waze, which is also owned by Google.
