There are an estimated 2,200 Manx speakers on the Isle of Man.

The Isle of Man's native language has been added to Google Translate, making it more widely available around the world.

Manx, a Celtic language believed to have survived the brink of extinction, is one of 110 new languages ​​being added to the service using artificial intelligence (AI).

The fisherman Ned Maddrell, who died in 1974, is said to be the last native speaker of Manx, but thanks to a language revival movement since then, 69 children are currently learning Manx at Bunscoil Gaelga, a Manx-speaking school.

There are an estimated 2,200 Manx speakers on the Isle of Man, of which over 1,000 children are learning Manx at school, and there are proposals to double that number by 2032.

Dr Maddrell said the Manx Language Research Group was working to further promote the Manx language online, which had enabled Google's AI technology to collect Manx words for translation purposes.

However, she advises against relying on the service for accuracy, suggesting that Google Translate users check phrases with Culture Vanin's own translation service instead.

“At the moment Google Translate can translate some Manx phrases accurately, but there are some phrases that are not accurate,” Dr Maddrell said.

“It would be horrible if people got the wrong tattoo on their arm or spent a lot of money getting it tattooed on a plaque or document,” she added.

Dr Maddrell said that despite the Isle of Man's small size, there was a lot of interest around the world in the island and its language, citing a recent New York Times feature on the revival of the Manx language.

“We are a small country but we have a very big impact,” she said, thanking the volunteers and the island's government for their support.
