On June 29, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs welcomed Google Translate's recent addition of Crimean Tatar language.

“We thank Google for this important initiative, which demonstrates that the rich linguistic and cultural heritage of indigenous Ukrainians is valuable to the international community,” the foreign ministry said in a statement.

The statement comes just days after Google announced the “biggest expansion” of its free online translation tool, Google Translate, adding 110 new languages.

In addition to Crimean Tatar, Google is incorporating the languages ​​of 12 Russian ethnicities, including Bashkir, Chechen, Udmurt and Yakut. Tatar, the language spoken in the Russian Republic of Tatarstan, was already added in 2020.

Google says the newly added languages, which include Cantonese and Punjabi, cover more than 614 million speakers worldwide.

The Ukrainian government has sought to protect the Crimean Tatar language, which is in danger of disappearing due to a decline in the number of speakers in Ukraine. Mass expulsions of Crimean Tatars and a series of crackdowns by both Imperial Russia and the Soviet Union contributed greatly to the language's decline.

This trend has been exacerbated by Russia's illegal annexation of Crimea in 2014. Crimean Tatars living in their homeland on the peninsula continue to face brutal persecution and expulsion at the hands of the Russian occupation regime.
