Google Wallet supports American Express as Fitbit Pay demise looms

What you need to know: Google has released a new Play Services patch that adds support for American Express cards to the Wallet app on Fitbit devices. The update brings an update to Android users that adds support for Pix, new ID features, and support for the Google Pay e-wallet. This choice comes after Google previously notified users that the Fitbit Pay app was preparing to shut down on July 29.

Google's latest Play Services has a strong focus on digital wallet apps, adding new cards to Fitbit as it closes out its payment services.

As detailed in the system patch notes, Google Play Services version 24.25 brings Wallet support for American Express cards to Fitbit devices (via 9to5Google ). The update extends Wallet updates to Android devices, and the company says it introduces a new feature that lets users add identities to their digital wallets.

Wallet for Android has introduced support for Pix as an alternative payment method for shoppers, and users also get support for adding e-wallets as a payment method through Google Wallet.

Alternatively, users can complete the transaction using their e-wallet paired with Google Pay.

These new features in Wallet on Android, along with new card support in Fitbit Pay, are rolling out and should be more widely available soon.

Google's new support for American Express for Fitbit users comes as the company prepares to shut down its Fitbit Pay service in July. The company notified users in an email in May that Google Wallet would take over all Fitbit Pay app functionality on the wearable company's devices on July 29.

Google said the video should “benefit” users as it opens up a portfolio of around 5,000 supported banks and cards that can be added. Fitbit Pay's impending shutdown affects the following devices: Fitbit Charge 6, Charge 5, Charge 4, Charge 3, Sense 2, Sense, Versa 4, Versa 3, Versa 2, and Versa.

Fitbit encourages users to start migrating their paired cards and banks to Wallet before the deadline of July 29. Users have been able to use the Fitbit Pay app on their trackers and watches since May, but the option to add cards has been removed.

Google continues to absorb Fitbit into its ecosystem, recently shutting down the wearable's standalone online store.
