Unreleased cubes from the Google Play Store now in your collection

Overview Google Play Store is working on Collections feature as a central hub for app discovery. The feature is still in development but seems to be nearing release. Formerly called “Cubes”, Collections will be available in the US first and will expand to other countries.

Widgets spice up your Android experience with widgets for weather, sports, to-do lists, messaging apps and more, making them some of the best widgets on the Google Play Store. But what about the Play Store itself?

Last year, it was reported that Google was working on a new feature called Cubes, a central widget hub that would help you discover new apps across the Play Store. Development on the feature had stalled, but it finally started to take shape late last year, when placeholder images were released showing what the finished widget would look like.

Google has remained silent about what Cubes actually are

Now, thanks to the latest Google Play Store beta, we have more hints about the feature and a possible new name for it.

First shared by Android Authority as part of the Google Play Store (version 41.6.26) update, the Cubes feature, which is still in development, has been revamped as it nears release and is now named “Collections.”

With the feature enabled through a hidden flag, when you long press on the Play Store icon, collections will now be displayed as part of the context menu. When you open the widget, you will see all the familiar Play Store categories like Watch, Read, Listen, Shopping, Social, etc., so you can discover new applications within them. The various categories displayed will reportedly house applications that have partnered with Google, allowing users to find apps at a glance.

Limited availability in the US

A teardown of the app's APK suggests that Collections will be limited to the US, at least initially: “Currently, Collections is only available in the US. We'll expand to more countries and let you know when access is available. If you're in the US, try signing into Collections with a different account,” the app's code reads.

Either way, the feature isn't yet widely available and judging by the screenshots, it appears to still be in development – it's unclear at this time when Collections will roll out.

In other widget-related news, the latest Google Contacts version 4.31 will let you see and respond to notifications directly from within the widget, and Google's Weather app will get a new icon.
