Now supports 110 new languages
In recent months, Google's Gemini family of artificial intelligence models has been gaining attention, but it is not the only one of importance: PaLM 2, launched in May 2023, stands out for its excellent multilingual capabilities and currently powers about 20 of the technology company's services.
Google Translate has just started reaping the benefits of PaLM 2. According to a blog post from the Sundar Pichai-led company, the model has allowed it to add 110 new languages to the service. Google has been gradually introducing new languages over the years, but it is now facing its biggest expansion yet.
Adding more languages to Google Translate
Some of the most spoken languages are English, Mandarin, Hindi and Spanish, but there are many others in the world, which is why Google Translate now supports everything from Cantonese, one of the most requested languages by users, to Manx, the Celtic language of the Isle of Man.
The search giant asserts that these new languages represent more than 614 million inhabitants, which is 8% of the planet's population, noting that some languages are very popular, while others are little known and spoken by small indigenous communities.
There are languages that have almost no native speakers left, but their revitalization efforts are being considered. At this point, it is worth highlighting the benefits of technology, which, beyond its popularity, opens the door to the possibility of offering translations into a wide range of languages. AI models were used by Google to efficiently determine which languages are closely related to each other, such as Awadhi and Marwadi, to support the new option. There is certainly a lot more to be done, and the company promises to continue adding new languages over time.
New languages are now available in Google Translate, although not all languages have the same benefits. Features like mobile camera translation, voice translation, and text to speech may not be available for many of the supported languages.
