Workers want to join the AI revolution

Lately, we've been hearing a common thread from all quarters, with scary headlines about artificial intelligence taking over jobs. A Business Insider headline from last August screamed that AI will take over many more jobs than anyone realizes. CNN recently roared that AI will replace human jobs faster than you think. Everywhere you go, you'll see lists of jobs that AI will replace now or soon. For example, this somber article from MSN, “24 Jobs AI Could Take Over: Will Your Job Survive?” While your job may be safe for now, there's no guarantee it will be okay in the future, the author predicts gloomily.

But workers don't seem to have gotten the memo, or any memos at all. Recent surveys have found little evidence of fear or loathing among workers that their jobs might change as AI makes a big impact on the workplace. In fact, most workers seem happy that AI will help them do their jobs.

For example, a new Salesforce survey of 6,000 employees found that 77% of today's workers trust AI and would like it to take over nearly half of their work. Top categories of fully autonomous tasks with high trust include writing code (15%), discovering data insights (13%), drafting written communications (12%), and acting as a personal assistant (12%).

Similarly, only 5% of 150,735 workers who responded to a Boston Consulting Group survey expressed concern that AI would eliminate their jobs, while 25% believe their jobs will not be affected and 49% say that AI may change some tasks.

The majority of the 56,600 workers surveyed by PwC also expect AI to have a positive impact: At least 31% expect AI to improve productivity and efficiency, and 21% expect AI to create new job opportunities.

According to a Salesforce survey, workers today already entrust AI with about 43% of their work. Nearly 8 in 10 workers, or 77%, will eventually trust AI to perform tasks autonomously. 10% trust autonomous AI today, and 26% plan to trust autonomous AI within three years.

According to a BCG survey, about 40% of employees use generative AI tools regularly. Employees aren't afraid of generative AI, and most say they need help understanding what skills they should develop.

Trust is key. Employees want to be involved in the process of deploying AI to accomplish tasks. According to a Salesforce survey, at least 63% of employees want to have a say in AI adoption decisions. The problem is, 54% of employees say they don't know how AI is deployed or managed in their workplace. Training could be another key to trusted autonomy: 62% of employees say more skill-building and training opportunities would increase their trust in AI.

Workers currently using generative AI do so for menial activities like research, administration and translation, and BCG has found similar uses to replacing Google with genAI, the study authors noted.

The BCG authors add that workers who use generative AI most frequently are using it for their core job functions, not just general administrative tasks or research. GenAI applications for individuals most often include fact finding or general knowledge acquisition (40%), skill development or learning (38%), or translating material from other languages (33%).

Outside of the workplace, people are using generative AI as a career advancement and job search tool, using it to create resumes and cover letters, for example.
