Interactive: MM2H Google searches surge from Singapore, Hong Kong, and China

PETALING JAYA: Google searches for Malaysia My Second Home (MM2H) have surged following a recent update to the programme's rules, with the highest level of interest from overseas coming from Singapore, Hong Kong and China.

According to Google Trends data taken on June 28, the global popularity of the search term jumped to 87 points between June 16 and 22, up from 46 points the previous week.

On June 14, the Cabinet approved updated regulations for the MM2H program.

Google ranks the interest of search terms on a scale from 0 to 100, with 100 being the highest popularity for a search term.

Since the announcement of the MM2H rule updates on June 14, Malaysia is the country that has seen the most interest in Google's MM2H program, followed by Singapore, Hong Kong, China and Taiwan.

The current surge in interest in this search term is its fourth peak in the past five years.

Each peak occurred during a key event related to the MM2H program.

The first was in late June 2020. On June 26 of that year, the MM2H program was suspended in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The second spike occurred in early June of the following year, after the MM2H suspension was lifted.

The third surge was to occur in December 2023, following a move to overhaul MM2H announced on December 15th.

Google Trends data also shows what MM2H-related keywords people around the world are searching for.

Over the past five years, the top MM2h-related search has been “Malaysia”, followed by “MM2H Malaysia”, “MM2H Malaysia”, “MM2H requirements” and “MM2H news”.
