Minnie Bell's announces closure of East Bay store
Chef Fernay McPherson opened a second location of her restaurant Minnie Belle's Soul Movement in the Fillmore District in April, but the Emeryville location will close on Sunday, July 28. The soul food restaurant, located inside the Public Market on Shellmound Street, has called the Emeryville Food Hall home since 2018, first starting as a pop-up before upgrading to a permanent kiosk. In a press release, McPherson said she decided to close the restaurant to focus all her efforts on her new location as a three-generation San Francisco native.
Chef Park Ulrich expands restaurant empire to San Jose
Water Bar and Epic Steak chef Park Ulrich is set to open a new restaurant in downtown San Jose, reports the Mercury News. The unnamed project is planned for the first floor of an office building at 50 West San Fernando Street, space formerly occupied by public media organization KQED (which has since vacated the site). Sources say the restaurant is expected to open in the first three months of 2025.
McDonald's McPlant Burger fails in San Francisco
According to the Los Angeles Times, McDonald's U.S. president told attendees of The Wall Street Journal's World Food Forum this week that the company's planned test launch of a plant-based burger in San Francisco and Dallas in 2022 was unsuccessful. The McPlant, which features a patty developed in collaboration with meat substitute company Beyond Meat, debuted in 600 McDonald's restaurants in the Bay Area and Dallas-Fort Worth in late 2021, but by March 2022, a research firm concluded that customers were disappointed with the culinary creation, the Times wrote. The company ended the test launch by July 2022 without a national rollout. McDonald's President Joe Erlinger told attendees of The Wall Street Journal's World Food Forum this week that consumers have not yet asked McDonald's for the McPlant or other plant-based proteins, but said the company will continue to monitor developments.
