Teens following Google Maps to hospital plunge into Kerala river

Two young men were heading to a hospital using Google Maps to find directions when their car fell into a swollen river, but miraculously escaped when it got stuck on a tree in Kasaragod district in the northernmost part of Kerala state.

Recently, a video showing firefighters rescuing people to safety from a flooded river at Palani in Kasaragod went viral on social media platforms on Sunday.

They were able to escape and contact firefighters only after their vehicle, which had been swept away by the current, got caught in a tree.

The rescued youths said they were on their way to a hospital in neighbouring Karnataka state in the early hours of the recent morning and had been using Google Maps to navigate.

One of the young people, Abdul Rasheed, said Google Maps had shown a narrow road so they drove through it.

“When I looked through my car's headlights, I thought I saw water in front of me, but I didn't see that there was a river on either side and a bridge in the middle. The bridge didn't even have side walls,” he told the TV station.

The car suddenly began to be swept away by the current and then became stuck in a tree on the riverbank.

By this time, they had managed to open the car doors and exit the vehicle, transmitting their location and contacting firefighters.

Firefighters then rushed to the scene and used ropes to pull the two to safety.

“I never thought I'd come back to life. It really feels like a rebirth,” Rasheed added.

Last month, a group of tourists from Hyderabad drove their car into a swollen river near Kurpanthara in Kottayam, apparently after using Google Maps.

Thanks to the efforts of a nearby police patrol and local residents, the four were able to escape safely, but the vehicle was completely submerged.
