Seven years ago, Lot Fourteen, South Australia's landmark innovation precinct, was a fully functioning hospital.

Boundless caught up with Di Dixon, the powerhouse behind Lot Fourteen, for an exclusive interview about its progress and the new production she's directing in South Australia, which she's speaking about here for the first time.

When I asked Dixon, the state Innovation Places director, how Lot Fourteen compares to other knowledge districts, tech hubs and innovation districts around the world, she mentioned the speed of development, which is not the norm globally.

We gutted the hospital, retained the historic elements and created a building that blends high tech, defense, space, cyber and creative disciplines. What we offer is far more than your average new build on a greenfield site in the suburbs.

The success of Lot Fourteens has been a consistent focus on revitalization, programming, and creating an environment where people move around its physical structure and come into contact with people from other compatible sectors.

Lot Fourteen broke down silos by curating and co-locating over 160 organizations on-site.

The rest of the country, and some countries around the world, are watching Lot Fourteen for that reason: “They're in awe of how quickly this place in the heart of the city is being transformed,” said Mr. Dixon, who often guides international delegations and dignitaries, including prime ministers and military chiefs, through the Innovation District as they search for the secret sauce to economic growth.

Dixon says having the right anchor tenant instilled confidence from the start, which in turn helped attract businesses needing to attract and retain talent post-pandemic and during a global skills shortage.
