52 Abuja schools stay ahead of climate change and green energy

CleanTech Hub's First Nigerian Students Climate Summit

World Environment Day 2024 was a big day for students in Abuja as green energy company CleanTech Hub hosted 52 schools at the first ever Nigerian Student Climate Summit.

Four secondary schools in Abuja shone above the rest with their innovative products that tackle challenges of adapting to climate change, green energy and clean technology at the Nigerian Students Climate Summit held at the Yar'Adua Centre to mark the recent World Environment Day.

The summit saw the participation of 52 schools and several enthusiastic and passionate young innovators. 21 schools participated in the Clean Tech Innovation Challenge.

Panelists deemed the submissions excellent and promising.

The Clean Technology Hub organized this groundbreaking event to amplify the voices of Nigerian students and empower them to tackle environmental challenges head on. Students came prepared to show off their products and ideas. Four schools were awarded prizes.

Cleantech Innovation Challenge winners showcased a range of projects, from waste-to-wealth initiatives and recycling solutions, to renewable energy and energy efficiency concepts, climate-smart agriculture, climate robotics and Internet of Things (IoT) applications.

Government Secondary School, Kubwa won first place in Smart City Web of the Future; Government College of Science and Technology, Garki came second for Production of Biogas and Organic Fertilizer from Biowaste; Tulip International Women's College, Nigeria (Wuse 2) came third in Green City and Spring Hall British School, Maitama won first place in Energy Efficiency IOT Home Devices.

21 schools presented innovative concepts and prototypes of solutions to local climate challenges.

The Student Climate Summit allowed young innovators to showcase their cleantech innovations and engage in important discussions on the environment and the global transition towards net-zero emissions. The event was a testament to the creativity and determination of Nigerian youth.

The panel discussion highlighted the diverse ways young people from different fields are contributing to climate policy and environmental justice. From architecture and law to software engineering and mathematical modeling, young people showcased their innovative approaches and unwavering commitment to tackling climate change.

The event was attended by distinguished guests, including government officials, sponsors, partners, jury members and industry representatives. Representatives from the Federal Ministry of Science and Technology, the Ministry of the Environment and the Swedish Embassy highlighted the importance of the event in promoting climate action and encouraging youth participation.

Climate art and stage performances added a creative dimension to the event, with students using drama, dance, poetry, presentations etc to enlighten participants on the need for environmental protection and climate justice. The presentations culminated in an electrifying performance by GSS Gwagwalada, which left an indelible impression on attendees.

As the world grapples with the urgent challenge of climate change, the Nigerian Students Climate Summit demonstrated the enormous potential of Nigerian youth to spearhead innovative solutions.
