Weekly Tech Report: Meta AI debuts in India, Google Translate adds support for seven new Indian languages, and more

1) Meta AI Enters India:

Meta has finally rolled out its AI chatbot, Meta AI Assistant, to Indian users through its applications like WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, and a separate website called Meta.AI. Notably, Facebook's parent company had announced Meta AI over two months ago and made it available in countries like Australia, Canada, and New Zealand. However, India was not the first target for the Meta AI rollout, likely due to the ongoing Lok Sabha elections.

Meta AI is available in searches across Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger. Additionally, users can also get insights from Meta AI while scrolling through posts in the Facebook app. This AI assistant also comes with real-time search results from Microsoft and Google, so you can call it up in a group chat to get a real-time overview, like planning a trip or finding the least crowded route to a destination.

2) New Indian languages in Google Translate:

Tech giant Google has significantly expanded its Google Translate service, adding support for 110 new languages. The major upgrade, announced on Thursday, marks the translation tool's biggest expansion ever, bringing the total number of languages it now supports to 243.

The latest additions are made possible through the use of Google's in-house PaLM 2 large language model (LLM), which uses artificial intelligence (AI) to learn new languages, particularly related languages and regional dialects.

The seven new Indian languages added to the list include Awadhi, Bodo, Khasi, Kokborok, Marwadi, Santali and Tulu.

3) OpenAI starts work on Critic GPT:

OpenAI recently announced the development of a new AI model called CriticGPT, designed to identify and correct mistakes in code generated by GPT-4. Detailed in a blog post on Thursday, the AI company explained that CriticGPT leverages the Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback (RLHF) framework, a technique that combines machine output and human input to improve AI systems.

CriticGPT is still in development and not accessible to users or testers, but it aims to improve the quality of AI-generated code. In testing, OpenAI found that people who used CriticGPT to review code generated by ChatGPT performed 60 percent better than those who did not use the model. The findings are summarized in a recently published paper.

4) Amazon could take on ChatGPT with Metis AI chatbot:

Amazon is reportedly moving into the artificial intelligence (AI) space with a new chatbot project codenamed Metis. Positioned to compete against existing models such as OpenAI's ChatGPT, the effort could mark Amazon's strategic foray into the burgeoning AI chatbot market.

According to a Business Insider report, Amazon's Metis aims to revolutionize user interactions through advanced AI capabilities. Named after the Greek goddess of wisdom, the chatbot is expected to debut at Amazon's annual Devices and Services event in September 2024.

According to reports, a source familiar with the project said that Metis will utilize Amazon's proprietary AI model, Olympus, to achieve advanced functionality that goes beyond current industry standards. Unlike previous models, Metis is designed to work seamlessly via a web browser, enabling widespread accessibility.

5) Made by Google 2024 event announced:

Google has announced that it will hold its “Made by Google 2024” event on August 13th, earlier than usual. This year's event, which is usually held in October, has been brought forward by two months, sparking a lot of talk and speculation about early product announcements, especially the highly anticipated Pixel 9 series.

The upcoming event will take place at Google's headquarters in Mountain View, California, rather than the usual New York venue. The event will begin at 10AM PST (10:30PM IDT). Specific details of the livestream have yet to be announced, but the early announcement has already created high anticipation.

According to a report from 9To5Google, the event will focus on “Google AI, Android software, and the Pixel device portfolio.” This indicates that Google is likely to unveil the Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, and the highly anticipated Pixel 9 Pro XL. The company has already released a short 12-second teaser video showcasing the Pixel 9 Pro, confirming speculation about the launch.
