StartUp Westport Mentors: Appreciation Through Innovation

If you’re in any kind of business – and who isn’t in business in Westport? – you know the value of mentorship.

Young people are eager to learn how to succeed in the workplace, build connections and advance their careers.

Older people love to give advice, watch others grow, and give back the help they once received.

Unfortunately, very few people know how to be truly effective mentors.

Or how can you learn the most as a mentor?

They should follow StartUp Westport's example.

Our town’s public-private partnership with a local ecosystem of entrepreneurs, investors and innovators in information technology, biotechnology, social impact and related fields has resulted in a robust mentorship program that together creates and celebrates Westport’s growing tech and innovation community.

We match mentors with mentors. We offer large-scale, small-scale, and one-on-one programs to foster collaboration. And, although we've only been in business for a few months, we're already seeing visible results.

The process begins online, with a dedicated page on the StartUp Westport website providing potential mentors and mentors with information about what mentorship is and isn't. Practical advice is offered, from goal setting to how to book a meeting room at Westport Library.

So far, 66 people have signed up as mentors and 55 as mentors. Program director Susan Fenn has matched 46 people (23 pairs) with the first class. Program founder Noah Fenn says a special effort is made to “close the opportunity gap” for historically marginalized groups.

Each month, they participate in a “mentorship circle,” a session in which one or two mentors provide targeted skills development to five to 25 mentors.

Peter Boyd recently spoke on “The Coaching Mindset” and upcoming topics will include marketing fundamentals, fundraising, business plans, social media and more.

But the core of the program is one-on-one mentorship.

Mentee Bari Schrager said, “The transition from a structured corporate environment to launching a retail media network was a big leap for me, and I'm incredibly grateful to StartUp Westport and my mentor, Kal Amin, who was my linchpin of support and expert guide.”

Ben Haber works in the entertainment industry, and his mentor, Dan Zuller, is a cryptocurrency and startup expert who has personally educated himself on his mentor's business.

“He provided thoughtful comments and critiques throughout the process, which was a time-consuming but extremely valuable effort,” Haber says.

“The mentorship program is a great experience and very well planned and executed.”

Mentee Kamrock Tovar described his mentorship with Ted Parker as “life-changing” and “transformative.”

Vibrant Health owner Ted Parker, who spoke at the Startup Westport forum about diverse entrepreneurial opportunities, took Tovar to a rebranding and label redesign meeting at his headquarters, where he was encouraged to offer advice and his insights were taken seriously.

Tovar said mentor and mentor discussed topics that went far beyond business and nutritional supplements, and he learned how Parker balances his many responsibilities.

But Parker's “willingness to learn from me has been just as impactful. This journey has left me excited about the possibilities for the future.”

Parker was a guest on Tovar's podcast from the University of Bridgeport.

“After just a few days with Cam, I started to wonder: Who is the mentor and who is the mentor?” Parker said.
