Indiana University Indianapolis makes history today as it officially transitions from IUPUI to IU Indianapolis, taking another step toward building the nation's leading public urban research university.

With more than 20,000 students, more than 400 academic programs and nearly 50 research centers and institutes, IU Indianapolis is uniquely located near some of the state and region's leading employers. This proximity creates natural opportunities for partnerships with business and government, providing valuable experiences for students and enhancing Indiana's economic vitality.

IU Indianapolis' official opening represents a new era for higher education in Indianapolis, said IU Indianapolis' first president, Latha Ramchand. “With student success as our North Star, our dedicated faculty and staff will foster an environment that puts education, innovation and community first. This incredibly powerful combination will help us serve as an anchor institution for our city, state and region while preparing our students to face unimaginable challenges.”

Following an official proclamation from Mayor Joe Hogsett, the City of Indianapolis will designate July 1, 2024, as IU Indianapolis Day. The proclamation recognizes IU Indianapolis for serving as a hub for academic exploration and innovation, providing a highly educated workforce that drives progress in both the city and state.

“These important partnerships across the city enhance the student experience and connect students to an ecosystem of entrepreneurship and opportunity,” said Quinn Buckner, chair of the IU Board of Trustees. Combined with cutting-edge innovations from our faculty that improve health outcomes and advance technology improvements, IU Indianapolis' impact is immeasurable.

The IU Board of Trustees recently approved the construction of a $110 million athletics facility on campus that will be well-suited to host indoor sports and athletics events important to both the community and the university, including the IU Indianapolis Jaguars team.

IU's presence in Indianapolis dates back to the late 19th century, when the school began serving Indiana residents in the state capital. The campus has since expanded and developed, setting the stage for a new chapter for IU Indianapolis.

National and domestic impacts

IU is investing in Indianapolis as part of Wittens' vision to make the campus the leading urban research university in the nation. As part of a more than $250 million investment in biosciences, IU has established two new institutes in Indianapolis: the Convergent Bioscience and Technology Institute and the Human Health and Well-Being Institute. Both will bring new faculty to Indianapolis as well as add laboratory and research space. The labs will be located in the new IU Indianapolis Science Institute Building, a state-of-the-art interdisciplinary research facility being constructed as part of the campus's Science and Technology Corridor. Poised to help IU achieve the bold goals outlined in the IU 2030 Strategic Plan, the space will foster collaboration and a broad research portfolio across the life sciences. It is expected to open in 2026.

With the nation's largest medical school, top programs in business, computing, law, arts and humanities, nursing and education, and the world's first School of Philanthropy, the University of Indianapolis is tackling many of the world's most pressing problems. At the University of Indianapolis School of Medicine, faculty are at the forefront of Alzheimer's research. The school is home to the Indiana Alzheimer's Disease Research Center, one of the nation's oldest centers dedicated to Alzheimer's research, and the National Central Repository for Alzheimer's Disease and Related Dementias, which contains blood, tissue and DNA samples used in Alzheimer's research around the world.

Faculty from the Herron School of Art and Design have collaborated to develop a new form of art therapy that uses technology to help ALS patients express themselves. Herron faculty also create public sculptures across the region and country, connecting contemporary art with art history as it evolves. Anthropology faculty from the College of Arts and Sciences are cataloging and analyzing historical finds as urban archaeology helps preserve history in downtown Indianapolis.

Indianapolis researchers in emerging fields like artificial intelligence and machine learning are using AI to get to the root causes of disease, while others are working to improve maternal and child health through efforts to support housing equity for pregnant women. Everyday research made possible by the campus's proximity to urban environments creates opportunities like the Diabetes Impact Project (DIP-IN), led by the Fairbanks School of Public Health in partnership with Eli Lilly and Company, which is working with three Indianapolis communities to reduce diabetes rates.

The Rady School of Informatics, Computing and Engineering, the first information science school in the country, is advancing interdisciplinary research at the forefront of bioinformatics and engineering for health and well-being through its Department of Biomedical Engineering and Informatics. Renowned expert Mohamed Abdel Motaleb will serve as the first dean of the Rady School's new Computer Science Department starting this fall in Indianapolis. The Computer Science program will be established in 2023 and students enrolled in the program will have the opportunity to concentrate on fast-growing, high-demand areas such as cybersecurity, software engineering and computer networking, providing an accessible, interdisciplinary, hands-on education in the field.

Developing tomorrow's workforce

IU Indianapolis is committed to improving access to higher education for local students. An expansion of the Seamless Admissions Program allows Indianapolis Public Schools high school students with a 3.0 GPA to be automatically admitted, and a recently announced dual enrollment program between Ivy Tech and IU Indianapolis allows students to earn both an associate's and bachelor's degree.

IU Indianapolis is addressing the state's nursing shortage by increasing enrollment at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, hiring more full-time faculty and creating a robust, year-long mentoring program to help first-time educators transition into the classroom.

Nearly 90 percent of IU Indianapolis four-year degree recipients live and work in the state after graduation. This creates unique opportunities to provide the future workforce needed for local, state and regional economies. For example, a collaborative partnership with Eli Lilly and Company allows undergraduate students from the Kelley School of Management, School of Health and Human Sciences and Rady School to gain hands-on training while working for Lilly for a semester or more for credit. IU McKinney School of Law’s Rural Justice Initiative provides students with the opportunity to gain real-world experience in rural areas across Indiana during the summer. Additionally, some students are playing key roles in helping organizations position downtown Indianapolis as an innovation ecosystem, including IU Indianapolis master’s students participating in the first Innovation and Entrepreneurship Internships in 16 Technology Innovation Districts.
