The Pixel 9's display reportedly uses the same panel as the iPhone 16 Pro

Google's Pixel phones have never quite caught up with the competition when it comes to adopting the latest and greatest specs, but the company is stepping up in certain areas: After debuting its “Actua” displays on the Pixel 8 series, Google is reportedly considering using the same Samsung OLED displays that Apple uses on the iPhone 16 Pro for the Pixel 9 series.

With the Pixel 8 series, Google has come out of a deep display quality gap to briefly launch the best smartphone display on the U.S. market, thanks to Samsung's OLED panels, which offer superior brightness and color.

A new report claims that Google will once again turn to Samsung for displays.

ETNews reports that Google will adopt Samsung's updated “M14” OLED panels. The new panels are said to be brighter and have improved lifespan. According to the report, Google will use this new generation of OLED panels in the Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL, and Pixel 9 Pro Fold.

It's worth noting, however, that Google isn't alone in this effort: the iPhone 16 Pro lineup is expected to use the same new panels. Apple has used Samsung's top-end displays for its “Pro” iPhones for the past few years, with previous releases using the “M12.” The base iPhone 16 model will continue to use the same generation, but the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max will both use the “M14,” just like the Pixel.

Google is set to release its Pixel 9 series on August 13, well ahead of its usual schedule, while Apple is set to release its new iPhones in September.
