Google invests in Taiwanese solar company to promote green energy

Google is investing in a Taiwanese solar power company with plans to build a 1 gigawatt (GW) sustainable energy pipeline in the region. The company is putting shares into New Green Power (NGP), part of BlackRock's investment portfolio, for the project. The move brings Google and Taiwan closer to their climate goals while also stabilizing green energy production in one of the new AI-infused world's most important semiconductor hubs.

Google already has a significant presence in Taiwan, including data centers. Currently, about 85% of Taiwan's power grid is generated by fossil fuels, according to Amanda Peterson Corio, Google's global head of data center energy. To overcome these obstacles, the company can play a pivotal role in finding new strategies to increase the supply of available renewable energy sources and advance emerging technologies that could enable the full decarbonization of the region's power system, she wrote.

Google plans to use up to 300 megawatts of solar power capacity for its Taiwan data centers, and Peterson Corio said the company will also use some of this clean energy capacity to [its] He said this will help partner companies meet their green energy targets and reduce indirect (Scope 3) emissions from Google's supply chain partners.

Regulators have yet to approve the deal, and Google has not disclosed how much it will invest in NGP.
