Mustafa Suleiman, head of AI at Microsoft, said anyone can train an AI model for free using information from the internet.

Mustafa Suleiman, head of Microsoft's AI division, believes that anything available on the internet should be freely used to train AI models. In an interview with CNBC, Suleiman downplayed concerns about AI companies gaining access to intellectual property. He believes that the freedom to copy and use publicly available content has long been the norm online.

He said: “In terms of content that's already on the open web, I think the social contract around that content since the '90s has been that it's fair use. Anyone can copy it, recreate it with it, reproduce it. It's freeware, so to speak, and that's how it's been understood.”

He went on to say that unless a publisher or news organization explicitly asks them not to scrape or crawl the content for any purpose other than indexing, AI companies can use it to train their AI models. “If a website or publisher or news organization explicitly tells you not to scrape or crawl it for any purpose other than indexing so that other people can find this content, that's a different category,” he said. “It's a gray area, and I think it will be resolved in court.”

In May of this year, eight American newspaper companies filed a lawsuit against Microsoft and OpenAI, alleging that the companies were using their articles without permission in their artificial intelligence products. The company, which owns major newspapers such as the New York Daily News and the Chicago Tribune, claims that Microsoft's assistant “Copilot” and OpenAI's “Chat GPT” are using their copyrighted articles without permission or payment.

Additionally, the Center for Investigative Reporting (CIR), a nonprofit that runs Mother Jones and Reveal, also filed a lawsuit against tech giants Microsoft and OpenAI for using copyrighted material to train AI models without permission. The suit follows similar lawsuits filed by The New York Times and other media organizations. CIR accuses OpenAI and Microsoft of scraping journalistic content without permission or compensation to power AI products like ChatGPT.

The car insurance industry hasn't remained untouched by these changes. On the internet, drivers can compare insurance prices and find out which sellers have the best offers. View photos The advantages of comparing online car insurance quotes are the following: Online quotes can be obtained from anywhere and at any time. Unlike physical insurance agencies, websites don't have a specific schedule and they are available at any time. Drivers that have busy working schedules, can compare quotes from anywhere and at any time, even at midnight. Multiple choices. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Online quotes will allow policyholders the chance to discover multiple insurance companies and check their prices. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless. Usually, insurance companies will do research about a potential customer before granting him coverage. Online quotes can be sorted easily. Although drivers are recommended to not choose a policy just based on its price, drivers can easily sort quotes by insurance price. Using brokerage websites will allow drivers to get quotes from multiple insurers, thus making the comparison faster and easier.
