Scam phone numbers appear in PayPal, Microsoft Google search results

TROY — Troy Police are offering advice on how to avoid a new scam that's already affecting some Troy residents.

“If you are using the internet to find a business's phone number, we encourage you to search the company's main website rather than doing a quick Google search to find the number,” Troy Police Department Public Information Officer Benjamin L. Hancock said.

Two recent incidents highlight the dangers.

A Timberview Road resident reported issues with their PayPal account on June 4.

To get contact information, she Googled “PayPal” and called numbers she thought were officially associated with PayPal, police said.

The woman spoke with an unidentified suspect, who told her there were suspicious charges on her account and would help her remove them. She was instructed to download a remote desktop app onto her phone, after which she was asked to make several transactions to help determine how the “scam” was being carried out.

The victim followed the suspect's instructions to complete a Chase Zelle transfer, a Western Union transfer, and the purchase of two Target gift cards.

In total, she was scammed out of $1,859.

A Burnmore Street resident reported on June 5 that while they were using their computer, their screen locked up and went black, with a message to contact Microsoft security.

The victim did not call the number displayed on the screen, but instead searched Google for “Microsoft Security.” The victim called the number they found on Google, thinking it was a legitimate Microsoft number, but it was a scam number.

He spoke with an unidentified suspect, who told the man that if he sent the money via Zelle, they would test the man's computer and the money would be refunded.

The victim sent the money and the suspect increased the amount to $7,000.The victim realized it was a scam when he never got his money back.
