“The world of technology is evolving really fast, and the convergence of AI and education isn't just the future. It's here and now, and we're already seeing students embracing AI through their daily tasks and habits,” said Ineke Gesink of Microsoft Costa Rica during a virtual roundtable on the future of education and skills in Central America in terms of artificial intelligence, digital innovation and workforce development.

Held as part of AS/COA’s Digital & Data Governance series, the event saw speakers explore innovative AI-driven solutions to education challenges, share best practices and chart a path forward for leveraging AI in the workplace to meet the evolving needs of the region’s workforce.

Alejandro Anderick of Salesforce emphasized the important role the private sector plays in advocating for responsible and inclusive use of AI in education: “Together with students and communities, we must advocate for trustworthy, ethical, responsible and inclusive use of technology. The private sector can make an appropriate contribution. [making sure] Technology should be used for good,” he said.

During the roundtable, AS/COA hosted Costa Rica's Minister of Science, Innovation and Technology, Paula Bogantes, who was interviewed by Dr. Ellen Rose of Texas Tech University. Bogantes emphasized the importance of best practices in embracing AI and other innovations at the government level in Costa Rica. “Private companies are leading the way in AI development. We need to make sure we strengthen public-private collaboration,” she said.
