Apple iPhone 7 owners still have a chance to claim up to $349 in class action settlement

Deadline extended for certain iPhone owners to claim settlement money

The deadline for certain iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus owners to claim a cash payment from Apple has been extended until this Wednesday.

Anyone who owned any model between Sept. 16, 2016 and Jan. 3, 2023 and complained to Apple (AAPL) about audio issues with their phone is eligible to receive money from the class action settlement.

If an iPhone owner paid for a repair or replacement out of pocket and Apple has a record of it, the owner could be eligible for a minimum of $50 and a maximum of $349. If a user merely reported the problem to Apple but didn't pay the company for a repair or replacement, the owner could be eligible for up to $125.

The deadline for claims is now 11:59pm Pacific Time on Wednesday, July 3rd (2:59am Eastern Time on Thursday, July 4th), which is an extension from the original deadline of June 3rd.

To claim compensation, affected iPhone owners must have the notification ID and verification code that Apple sent to affected customers via email or postcard. Once users have that information, they can register on the settlement website's payment portal to claim compensation. Consumers can also call 1-833-633-0343 to find out if they are eligible for compensation.

The two iPhones covered by the settlement were released in 2016. Some users reported audio issues, including not being able to hear phone calls clearly. Some phone owners alleged that the issues were related to the phone's audio IC chip and filed a lawsuit against Apple, alleging that the company had violated consumer protection laws. Apple denied all the allegations, but the two sides reached an agreement to avoid further costs.

Apple did not immediately respond to MarketWatch's request for comment.
