700,000 OpenSSH servers face remote code execution CVE vulnerability

DIVE BRIEF: Qualys announced Monday that at least 700,000 OpenSSH servers are at risk of exploitation of the remote code execution vulnerability CVE-2024-6387, which the Qualys researchers who discovered it have dubbed regreSSHion. Qualys researchers have not yet rated the CVE but have called it critical, which poses a significant security risk. A signal handler race condition in OpenSSH server allows unauthenticated remote code execution as root on glibc-based Linux systems. Successful exploitation of this vulnerability could lead to a complete system compromise that allows attackers to execute arbitrary code with the highest privileges, which could result in complete system takeover, malware installation, data manipulation, or creation of backdoors for persistent access, Bharat Jogi, senior director of threat research at Qualys, said in the report. According to Qualys, the vulnerability is a regression of a previously fixed vulnerability, CVE-2006-5051, and affects OpenSSH versions 8.5p1 through 9.7p1. The latest update to the OpenSSH server, version 9.8p1, fixes the vulnerability.

Qualys recommended that businesses mitigate the risk by promptly applying the latest versions of their software and restricting access through network-based controls. Threat researchers also published technical details of the vulnerability on Monday.

The vulnerability likely exists on macOS and Windows, but researchers have not confirmed its exploitability on those systems.

Exploitation of CVE-2024-6387 could facilitate network propagation, allowing attackers to use a compromised system as a foothold to move laterally and exploit other vulnerable systems within an organization, Jogi said in the report. Additionally, gaining root access could allow attackers to circumvent important security mechanisms such as firewalls, intrusion detection systems and logging mechanisms, further obfuscating the attacker's activities.
