Assistant Professor's New Project Asks: Hey Google, Can You Understand ASL? | Accessible Human-Centered Computing

Dr. Abraham Glasser, assistant professor in Gallaudet University's Accessible Human-Centered Computing program and faculty researcher in the Center for Artificial Intelligence, Accessibility and Sign Language (AIASL), has been awarded a $174,999 grant from the National Science Foundation for his project, “CRII: HCC: American Sign Language-Enabled Digital Assistants: Models and Metrics for User Satisfaction.” The grant (2348221), which runs from June 1 of this year through May 31, 2026, will allow him to investigate how personal assistant devices such as Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa can better interact with people who use American Sign Language.

This is Glasser's first grant since joining the faculty last year. Because ASL recognition technology is still limited to a few sign languages ​​and finger spellings, the project puts Glasser on the cutting edge of research. “I'll be simulating what's possible in ASL technology in the near future, like word-level recognition, to see if this could be used for personal assistant technology,” Glasser explains. He'll also be simulating a full ASL recognition algorithm with different levels of accuracy and gauging user responses.

It's exciting for him to be immersed in this research while other researchers are actively working on ASL recognition algorithms. “I get to tell these researchers and developers whether their algorithms can be used in an ASL-enabled personal assistant device,” Glasser says. It's important to ensure that deaf-led research is translated into technology that is useful and beneficial to the ASL community before it is implemented and commercialized, further marginalizing this user group.

Glasser was encouraged to apply by Dr. Raja Kushalnagar, director of Garadet University's Bachelor of Information Technology program, co-director of the Master's in Accessible Human-Centered Computing program, and director of AIASL.

Earlier this year, Glasser spoke about the barriers posed by personal assistant devices and voice AI at the American Association for the Advancement of Science annual meeting in Denver, Colorado. A Gallaudet University-led research project on personal assistants was also presented at the recent ACM CHI Human Factors in Computing Systems conference in Hawaii.
