Tulsa Innovation Lab Wins $51 Million Grant | Good News

TULSA, Okla. – The Tulsa Hub for Equitable and Trusted Autonomy (THETA) has been awarded a $51 million grant as part of the American Economic Development Association’s Tech Hub program.

Led by the Tulsa Innovation Lab, THETA was designated a Tech Hub by the U.S. EDA in October 2023, recognizing its potential to be globally competitive in the development of autonomous systems such as drones.

This designation allows THETA to apply for implementation funding from EDA’s Tech Hub program.

The program is an initiative by President Biden’s Administration to invest in communities across the country that advance technology leadership.

Governor Stitt submitted a letter of commitment for the Tulsa Tech Hub as part of the application process.

“Oklahoma has a long history of excellence in aviation, defense and manufacturing, making our great state an ideal place to lead the development of the next generation of autonomous technology,” Governor Stitt said in a press release. “The future of autonomous systems is right here in Oklahoma, and it's exciting to see the innovation coming from Oklahoma companies as we continue to rank among the top 10 states.”

THETA was selected as one of 12 technology hubs across the United States to receive funding.

“This investment not only strengthens our state's economic foundation, but positions the Greater Tulsa region as a global leader alongside other great tech hubs across the U.S.,” Jennifer Hankins, managing director of the Tulsa Innovation Lab, said in a press release. “We're excited to partner with the Governor and State of Oklahoma to pioneer the future of innovation. We look forward to the day when autonomous vehicles, drones and robots being used around the world to protect Americans on the battlefield or deliver medicine to rural Midwestern communities will bear the title 'Tested and Made in Tulsa, USA.'”

The Tulsa Innovation Lab says the funding will create jobs and ensure U.S. global leadership in reliable autonomous driving.
