Statement by NSF Director Sethuraman Panchanathan on U.S. Economic Development Administration Regional Technology and Innovation Hub Awardees | NSF

The National Science Foundation congratulates the U.S. Economic Development Administration (EDA) on the announcement of the Regional Technology Innovation Hubs (Tech Hubs) today. In alignment with the CHIPS and Science Act of 2022, NSF and EDA have embarked on a significant effort to foster local, science- and engineering-driven regional innovation and economic development in communities across the nation. Through the NSF Regional Innovation Engines (NSF Engines) program, NSF invested an initial $150 million in 10 NSF Engines in January, which was joined by more than $350 million in public and private commitments, plus nearly $60 million in 58 additional planned grants over the past year. Through the Tech Hubs, EDA shares the goal of accelerating technology and innovation in regional ecosystems across the United States to address pressing challenges and grow the workforce of the future. NSF looks forward to working with EDA Tech Hub awardees to advance this mission, including several Tech Hubs that complement NSF’s investments in NSF Engines.

Under the Memorandum of Understanding, NSF and EDA will model a whole-of-government approach to usher in a new era of localized innovation and economic development in the United States, creating opportunity and jobs in every corner of the country. This effort will also unlock the technology and talent needed to ensure America's long-term economic competitiveness, security, and defense in the face of significant investment from other nations.
