Developers boot PCs from Google Drive cloud storage — turning storage-less laptops into true cloud-native computers
Developers are excited to be able to boot a Linux system from Google's cloud storage platform. After overcoming many hurdles, they managed to boot a storage-less laptop from Google Drive, creating a “cloud-native computer.”
Sambhav S., a computer science student at Purdue University and open source developer, felt the need to take on this cloud boot challenge after remembering how a friend had booted Linux from a network file system (NFS). The young developer, who says that “competitiveness is my vice,” wanted to come up with the most ambitious way to “top” the NFS story, and in a “crazy cry,” he decided to try booting Linux from Google Drive.
Sambhav had some experience with Linux software development and thought that a good starting point would be to adopt FUSE, a program that acts as a filesystem driver in user space. The big idea was that during the typical Linux boot process, a FUSE filesystem-based RAM disk would be provided with the main app, OS, and network binaries, making the dream of a Google Drive boot a reality.

After much tweaking, tweaking, and an overall closure of the surprising gap between expectation and reality, it was time to try booting from Google Drive on real hardware. Luckily, Sambhav had a spare laptop with no internal storage to test with. The transition from Virtual Machine (VM) development only required a few tweaks: the correct Ethernet drivers, display, and network settings to be built into the unified Extensible Firmware Interface (EFI) file.

Sambhav, the developer of this so-called cloud-native computer, says the project has been largely a “silly” pursuit, and there are issues with launching it from Google Drive currently being very slow. But the developer also boasts that “the possibilities are endless,” and welcomes any company or individual who wants to get in touch and discuss commercializing the project or anything related to it.
Note that various systems have supported network booting, and even HTTP booting, for decades. Google Drive is an entirely different proposition, but how much code can you add to the local side of the equation (firmware, etc.) while still saying you're booting from a remote source?
