Google to require disclosure of digitally altered election ads

Google plans to require advertisers to disclose election content that has been digitally altered to depict real people or events.

The update is part of the Political Content Policy and will require digitally altered ads to have the altered or synthetic content checkbox selected in campaign settings.

This will see the search giant create its own in-ad disclosures for mobile feeds and short videos, as well as in-stream on computers, mobile phones and TVs.

For other formats, the advertiser is responsible for providing prominent disclosure.

The update comes in a year when more than two billion people around the world are expected to head to the polls.

Synthetic election content that must be disclosed may include computer-generated audio, image, or video content.

Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, has also taken similar steps to combat the spread of misinformation.

Ahead of the recent EU elections, the company formed a team to tackle deepfakes and disinformation as part of its fact-checking network.

Metas' in-house deepfake watchdog was formed to identify potential threats and implement concrete mitigation measures, such as removing deceptive ads, exposing misleading AI-generated content and preventing them from being published.
