Google to invest another $1 billion in Council Bluffs data center

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa (WOWT) – Google announced additional investments in its Council Bluffs data center and nearby water conservation efforts on Tuesday.

In the announcement, Google committed an additional $1 billion to expanding its data centers, as well as $1.3 million to water conservation and protection efforts in the Missouri River Basin.

This comes nearly a year after Google pumped $350 million into the data center. This cash infusion brings the total project to just under 3 million square feet, bringing the company's total investment in the data center to more than $6 billion.

“It's a really welcoming business environment,” said Joe Cava, Google's vice president of data centers. “The locals here in Council Bluffs have been amazing and have embraced us like they're their own family. This is truly our home, our community. We've been active members of the community and have built great relationships, which is why we want to continue to invest here.”

The donation to the Missouri Valley River Basin aims to improve water quality in the region. The donation will be used for water conservation and protection efforts. It's similar to a $250,000 pledge Google made last August to the entrepreneurial hub Advance Southwest Iowa.

This marks the Council Bluffs Data Center's fourth expansion since it was first built in 2007.
