Tulsa awards $51 million for tech innovation

The federal Economic Development Administration has awarded a $51 million grant to the Tulsa Technology Innovation Consortium, which will use the money to develop new drone and related technologies and build a workforce for them.

Tulsa Innovation Labs is the leader of a group that includes universities, tribes and individual beneficiaries working on autonomy and AI-related projects.

Tyrance Billingsley, who heads Black Tech Street, said the group will be able to use the grant money and support from partners to be announced at a later date to build a store in Greenwood.

“We're establishing an AI center of excellence in Greenwood, which is half physical space and half people and programming, and basically looking to establish Greenwood as a blueprint for responsible AI in the country,” he said.

Last year, Tulsa was designated a tech hub by the Biden administration, leading to the award of competitive grants. Tulsa is one of 12 cities awarded funds under the program.

Jennifer Hankins, managing director of the Tulsa Innovation Lab, said the grant program will build on the historical expertise of Tulsa's workforce.

“Everything about autonomous systems comes from our traditional roots in aerospace, manufacturing, defense and energy. So what we're really doing is using this opportunity to think about the future in these industries and ensure that the innovation that these industries continue to create is innovated here, sustained here, stays here and grows here,” she said.

The Atlas School, a software training program, plans to expand its offerings to support other grant recipients.

“By building the physical infrastructure to test drones, we're attracting companies that can build and test these systems, which will create new jobs,” said Libby Ediger of the Atlas School. “And it's our job to fill the talent gap so those new jobs can come to town.”
