USB drives are very useful because they can store files to transfer between different computers or create bootable drives to use and install other operating systems on your computer. Online file storage systems such as Dropbox and Google Drive have taken over most of the former tasks from USB drives, but they cannot act as bootable media, leaving you with a few jump drives to hand. However, that may not be the case anymore, as this is the first guide that allows you to boot a Linux system using Google Drive.

However, unlike the tried-and-true jump drive method, this process is not at all trivial. The process relies on two keys: first, FUSE, which allows the creation of a file system in user space; second, it leverages a step in the boot process of a Linux system, where the kernel unpacks a temporary file system called initramfs and loads the real file system. Typically, users have little interaction with this step, but it is not impossible. A tool called dracut allows you to build a custom initramfs using an existing Linux installation. In this case, the custom initramfs is built to include the proper support for both networking and FUSE.

This proof of concept demo originally ran in a container, using an existing project called google-drive-ocamlfuse to interact with Google Drive itself. From there, after ironing out issues with root access, networking, glitches with symbolic links, and various timeouts on a (perhaps predictably) slow system, the whole contraption was moved to a laptop so it could be tested on real hardware. It all worked, and the original creator of this behemoth concedes that it's a bit “silly,” but says that there may be real-world use cases for such a contraption.
