Google Translate now supports Dholuo

Google has delivered the biggest language support update yet to its online translation service, with Google Translate now supporting Doluo, the language of the Luo people.
The Alphabet-owned tech giant has announced that it will expand Google Translate's language support pool, adding 110 new languages to the service.
The new update uses artificial intelligence (AI) and is powered by Google's PaLM 2 large-scale language model, which is also used by the company's AI chatbot, Bard.
Other new languages supported by Google Translate include Awadhi, Cantonese, and Marwari.
About a quarter of the languages are African, said Isaac Caswell, a senior software engineer at Google. He called this the latest expansion of African languages the company has made to date.
The Luo are made up of several Nile Basin ethnic groups found in Egypt, Sudan, South Sudan, Ethiopia, northern Uganda, eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, western Kenya and parts of Tanzania.
The Dholuo consider themselves the “original Luo” and the Dholuo language they speak is spoken by approximately 4.2 million Luo people in Kenya and Tanzania.
Caswell said that for languages with dialects, variants and spelling standards, Google Translate tends to output the most common variant it finds online, but sometimes it mixes multiple variants.
While the models do make silly mistakes in translation, each model has been tested and evaluated by native speakers. The models are all generally useful and accurate in most cases, and community members have emphasized their usefulness. The engineer wrote to X:
