Tulsa Tech Hub secures $51M, solidifies city as tech leader

TULSA, Okla. – The Biden-Harris Administration has awarded approximately $51 million to the Tulsa Hub for Fair and Trustworthy Government.

The funding will come from the U.S. Economic Development Administration.

The funding will create about 56,000 new jobs over the next decade. Tulsa was one of 12 tech hubs to receive funding after 200 communities applied.

“For us, this means Tulsa is now global,” said Jennifer Hankins, managing director of the Tulsa Innovation Lab, which leads the hub. “Together, we've put Tulsa on a trajectory of innovation and growth that benefits everyone.”

Hankins said it's taken a year to get to this point, with her and her team working with more than 75 partners across the country to secure funding from the federal government.

The last time we reported on this was in October 2023, when Tulsa was designated a tech hub for the first time.

It's only been about nine months since Tulsa was designated a tech hub.

“Together, we have put Tulsa on a trajectory of innovation and growth that benefits everyone,” Hankins told his colleagues at a celebration following the announcement.

The Tulsa Hub for Fair and Trusted Autonomy (THETA Tech Hub) aims to be a global leader in autonomous systems.

Federal funding will allow the THETA Hub to invest in existing projects while expanding education and programming for the future.

Some of the funds may even be put back into the hands of partners like Black Tech Street.

“We are establishing the Greenwood AI Center of Excellence to establish Greenwood as a blueprint for building responsible AI nationwide, particularly for autonomous systems,” said Tyrance Billingsley II, founder and executive director of BTS.

This investment in Tulsa Tech will create approximately 56,000 new jobs throughout the region.

“The Tulsa Innovation Lab, and particularly this tech lab proposal, is about sowing the seeds of an innovation economy, and that doesn't happen overnight,” Hankins said, “so we're investing in a lot of these efforts over a 10-year time horizon.”

While there are many goals for future technological developments, Hankins is mindful that what she and her team are building is an advancement on previous generations of research.

“I think a big crux of this is not getting too immersed in the technology and really thinking about how this is deeply and firmly rooted in what we already do well as Tulsans,” she said. “Everything about autonomous systems comes from our traditional roots: aerospace, manufacturing, defense, energy. So what we're really doing is using this opportunity to think forward about these industries and make sure that the innovation that these industries continue to create is innovated here, sustained here, stays here and grows here.”
