Gulf Coast residents turn to indoor facilities to beat the heat

BILOXI, Miss. (WLOX) – With record high temperatures expected to continue in South Mississippi over the next few days, residents all over the Gulf Coast are finding ways to beat the heat.

“Anyone in the public can purchase a two-hour swim session for $10, so we encourage people to buy online at least four days in advance,” said Morgan Shiyou, marketing coordinator for the Salvation Army.

Shio said the attractions of Biloxi's Kroc Center draw visitors from far away.

“We have people coming from as far away as Louisiana, from Hattiesburg to Mobile, to check it out,” Shiyou said, “we have tourists who are in the same place and others who come from far away just to enjoy our pool. We're a hidden gem, and we're proud of it. Where else can you find a two-story indoor waterslide here along the coast?”

The list doesn't end there: There's also a wrap-around lazy river, hydrotherapy pool, zero-depth entry and chairlifts.

Shio also praised the center's lifeguards, calling them “heroes in red” for their dedication to ensuring the safety of visitors.

“This year's team is really good,” Shiyou said.

The Kroc Center is just one of many South Mississippi venues where you can enjoy a cool break.

A short drive up Highway 90 is another venue, Big Play.

“Instead of going to the beach, we came to the arcade. The arcade is awesome. They even have bowling,” said Jared Davis.
