Google's greenhouse gas emissions have increased by about 50% over the past five years due to the data centers needed to power its artificial intelligence, according to its 2024 Environmental Report. Despite this added challenge, the report shows the company's progress toward reaching its goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2030.

Using AI features (not to mention training the models) consumes a lot of energy: In 2023, AI startup Hugging Face and researchers from Carnegie Mellon University found that using artificial intelligence to generate a single image uses as much energy as charging a smartphone.

Google has a lot of AI projects going on at the moment, and alongside generative AI tools like Gemini, it's using the technology to add over 100 languages ​​to its translation service, as well as the much-talked-about AI chatbot.

The report said Google expects its total greenhouse gas emissions to increase before decreasing toward its absolute emissions reduction target, but did not explain the reasons for this decrease.

The new smart road is one long tracking system designed to notify both the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) and drivers of potential upcoming issues. The highway pilot program is located between Ann Arbor and Detroit, Michigan, with plans to eventually extend the smart highway to 40 miles in six phases connecting the two cities.
